HOW TO STORE PERFUME SO IT DOES NOT GO OFF
Fragrance does expire. Where you keep it matters more than how old it is.
Most people keep fragrance on a bathroom shelf or a bedroom windowsill, which are the two worst places in the house.
Fragrance degrades. Not dramatically, but a bottle stored badly for a year will smell flatter and weaker than the same bottle stored well. Here is what actually damages it.
Light is the main problem
UV breaks down the aromatic compounds. This is why most fragrance comes in tinted or boxed packaging, and why a clear bottle on a windowsill is a slow disaster.
Keep it in a drawer, a cupboard, or the box it came in.
Heat is the second problem
Temperature swings accelerate the chemical breakdown. A bathroom goes from cool to steamy several times a day, which is exactly the wrong environment.
Somewhere stable and cool is what you want. Room temperature is fine. A bedroom drawer is ideal.
Air matters more than you would think
Every time you spray, a small amount of air enters the bottle and oxidises the remaining liquid. This is unavoidable, but it means a half-empty bottle degrades faster than a full one.
Keep the cap on. Do not decant into a spare atomiser unless you are going to use it quickly.
The fridge question
You will see advice recommending refrigeration. It is not necessary for normal use, and the repeated temperature change of taking it in and out is arguably worse than a stable drawer.
If you have a bottle you genuinely want to preserve for years, a cool dark cupboard does the job.
How long does fragrance actually last
Unopened and stored well, most eau de parfum keeps three to five years, often longer. Opened, expect three years or so before you notice a difference.
Fragrances heavy in citrus top notes fade faster. Those built on oud, amber and musk bases last considerably longer, which is one of the quieter advantages of Arabian fragrance.
How to tell if it has turned
The colour darkens noticeably. The opening smells sour or vinegary rather than bright. It sits closer to the skin and fades faster than it used to.
It will not harm you, it just will not smell like it should.
